Services for International Protection Applicants

Changes took place to the international protection system in Ireland as of 31st December 2016. Instead of applying separately for refugee status and subsidiary protection, a person now makes one single application for international protection.

If you are applying for international protection in Ireland, civil legal aid and advice can help you with your application. You can apply for legal services at any time but it is important to do so as soon as possible.

You should complete the international protection application form and associated consent form and return it to one of the specialised Law Centres listed below.

Law Centre (Smithfield) 48/49 North Brunswick Street Smithfield Dublin D07 PE0C

Telephone: (01) 6469600

Email: lawcentresmithfield@legalaidboard.ie

Law Centre (Pope's Quay) North Quay House Pope's Quay Cork T32 HV26

Telephone: (021) 455 1686

Email: lawcentrecorknorth@legalaidboard.ie

Law Centre (Seville House) Seville House New Dock Road Galway H91 CKVO

Telephone: (091) 562 480

Email: lawcentresevillehouse@legalaidboard.ie

If you are granted civil legal aid and advice, you will be represented by one of the above Law Centres, depending on where you live. The Law Centre may give you an immediate appointment, depending on when the next step that needs to be taken on your international protection application is.

You may have to pay a contribution of €10 towards your legal aid and advice. You can ask the Law Centre to waive the €10 contribution on hardship grounds. You should ask a member of staff about this when making your application.

What International Protection Legal Aid Covers

Civil legal aid and advice will help you with your application for international protection to the International Protection Office (IPO) and your appeal to the International Protection Appeals Tribunal (IPAT).

Civil legal aid for an international protection application will not help you with a judicial review of how the decision on your application was made but you might be able to get civil legal aid for that separately.
