About the Legal Aid Board

Established in 1979, the Legal Aid Board is an independent, publicly funded organisation, providing civil legal aid and advice, family mediation services, and administering three ad-hoc legal aid schemes connected with criminal matters. These aid schemes are:

  • The Garda Station Legal Advice Revised Scheme
  • The Legal Aid – Custody Issues Scheme
  • The Criminal Assets Bureau Ad-hoc Legal Aid Scheme

The Legal Aid Board were established by the Oireachtas under the Civil Legal Aid Act 1995 to provide civil legal aid and advice to persons unable to afford a solicitor. Since 2011 we have provided family mediation services, which is a free service where we provide help to separating couples to negotiate their own agreement.

Mission Statement

The Legal Aid Board strive to deliver effective, inclusive and equal resolution in the matters of family and civil disputes to those in need of our assistance. We do this through high quality legal representation, advice, and mediation, including other aspects of legal aid which have been entrusted to us.
